1. The alarm sounds and its icon is lit

The general audible alarm. Touching the alarm icon switches the sound off.

2. The door alarm — after about three minutes

Sounds when a door has been open longer than about 180 seconds, and switches itself back to standby as soon as the door is shut.

If this keeps happening, the question is not the alarm. It is why a door is standing open — and on these cabinets that is usually a closer that has lost its assist, so the door rests against the seal instead of pulling itself shut.

3. The temperature alarm — display and LED flashing together

Sounds when the freezer is not cold enough. The temperature display and the alarm LED flash at the same time, and the display keeps flashing until the cause has been rectified.

The maker names three causes, and only one is a problem with the appliance:

• warm, fresh food just placed in the freezer;
• too much warm air entering while frozen food was rearranged or removed;
• a problem with the appliance itself.

Give it two hours after loading before assuming the third.

4. Two dashes instead of a temperature

Not an alarm and not an error. The freezer display only shows below-freezing temperatures, so dashes mean it has not got there yet — three to five hours from a cold start, and the same after a power failure.

5. The power-failure light

The compartment got too warm while the electricity was off, and the display flashes with it.

Touch the alarm icon and it shows you the highest temperature the freezer reached. That is the number that decides what is safe to keep, and it is gone once you clear the alarm.

6. The display flashing after a change

Documented: it flashes when you change a temperature, and when the temperature rises by several degrees — for instance when warm food goes in, or frozen food is removed and repacked.

It stops on its own and lights steadily again.

So what is actually worth a call

An alarm that keeps returning with every door shut and nothing new inside. That is the appliance saying it cannot explain itself away, and at that point the beeping has stopped being information and started being a symptom.

Has anything warm gone in recently? A temperature alarm after loading is the appliance reporting the load rather than itself, and it stops on its own within a couple of hours.

Has the power been off? Then read the record before clearing it: touch the alarm icon and the appliance will show the warmest temperature it reached.

Is it still sounding with the door shut, nothing new inside, and hours gone by? That is the one worth a call, and the useful things to say on the phone are how long, what the display is showing alongside it, and whether the alarm light is lit with it.
