What a “Sealed System” Actually Is, and Why It Costs What It Costs

Five parts: the compressor, the condenser, the evaporator, the drier and the tubing that connects them. That is not our definition — it is Liebherr's own, written into its warranty, which makes it unusually easy to be precise about. Work inside that circuit is licensed, requires recovery equipment, cannot be split across visits, and starts around $650 for a repair or $850 once the compressor itself is the part being replaced. Everything outside those five parts — fans, sensors, control boards, door seals, hinges, defrost heaters, ice makers, water valves — is between $135 and $245 to start, which is the single most useful thing to know about pricing cold equipment. It is also why a proper diagnostic is worth paying for: it decides which side of that line you are on before anything is ordered. A sealed-system diagnosis rests on pressures and temperatures measured across the circuit, so a fair question to ask anybody who quotes you for one is what they measured and what the numbers were. Elimination is not diagnosis on the most expensive part of the appliance.

The full guide

The manufacturer defines it, which is unusually helpful

How much does a fridge freezer repair cost divides almost entirely on one question: is the sealed system involved or not.

The sealed system, and where a leak happens A closed loop of four components. The compressor raises the pressure and sends refrigerant to the condenser, which hands the heat to the room. A metering device drops the pressure, and the evaporator takes heat out of the food before the refrigerant returns to the compressor. The same charge circulates for the life of the unit, so a low charge means an opening somewhere in the loop. A CLOSED LOOP. THE SAME CHARGE CIRCULATES FOR THE LIFE OF THE UNIT. COMPRESSOR raises the pressure and moves it around CONDENSER hands the heat to the room METERING DEVICE drops the pressure EVAPORATOR takes heat out of the food a pinhole anywhere on the loop and the charge leaves — adding more sends it out of the same hole
Corrosion at the aluminum and copper joints is the leading cause in coastal South Florida, which is why a leak on a unit that has never been opened is a normal diagnosis here rather than a strange one.

Most repair companies use "sealed system" as a vague and expensive-sounding phrase. Liebherr writes the definition into its own warranty:

> The “Sealed System” means only the compressor, condenser, evaporator, drier and all connecting tubing.

Five parts. Everything else on the appliance is outside it, and outside it the money is completely different.

The line, in numbers

Inside the circuit:

  • sealed system repair — from $650
  • compressor replacement — from $850 (the above, plus the compressor)

Outside it, almost everything:

  • door seal — from $155
  • temperature sensor — from $175
  • evaporator fan — from $175
  • control board — from $245
  • ice maker — from $165
  • condenser cleaning — from $145

That gap is the single most useful thing to understand about pricing cold equipment, and it is why a diagnostic is worth what it costs: its job is to tell you which side of the line you are on before anybody orders anything.

Why the inside of the circuit costs what it does

It is licensed work. Refrigerant recovery requires certification and equipment, not a spanner.

Two years on everything, ten on the sealed system This maker's current major appliance warranty runs two years of parts and labor from the date of purchase, where the industry norm is one. On refrigeration a longer sealed-system term sits on top of it, stepping down in stages out to ten years, with the later steps typically covering the part rather than the work. The sealed system is the compressor, the evaporator, the condenser, the dryer and the tubing between them. The evaporator fan, the control board, the door and the ice maker are not part of it and sit under the shorter parts-and-labor term. If your machine is older, the terms that applied when it was sold are the ones that count. FROM THE DATE OF PURCHASE — CURRENT DOCUMENTS, MAJOR APPLIANCES year 1 2 5 10 TWO YEARS parts and labor everything outside the sealed system ends here REFRIGERATION, SEALED SYSTEM — OUT TO TEN YEARS stepping down in stages; the later steps typically cover the part, not the work WHAT THE SEALED SYSTEM IS, AND IS NOT It is compressor, evaporator, condenser, dryer, and the tubing that joins them It is not the evaporator fan, the control board, the door, or the ice maker Older machine? The terms that applied when it was sold are the ones that count. Ask the maker.
A sealed-system failure at six or seven years may still be partly covered. Make that call before approving any work, whoever you are talking to.

It cannot be staged. Recover, replace, evacuate, recharge is one continuous operation. There is no leaving it half done overnight.

Access first. On a fully integrated column the appliance comes out of the joinery before anything technical begins, which is an hour before the work starts.

How to tell a diagnosis from a guess

Ask what was measured.

A sealed-system diagnosis rests on pressures and temperatures at known points across the circuit. Those are numbers, they can be stated, and anybody who did the work can tell you them.

"We checked everything else and it must be the compressor" is elimination. On the most expensive component in the appliance, elimination is not good enough — particularly since a failing fan, a stopped defrost circuit and a leaking door seal all produce symptoms that look exactly like a system losing its ability to cool.

Check the warranty before you check anything

Liebherr publishes:

  • five years parts and labor on those five components;
  • parts only, sixth through twelfth year, on the same five.

If your cabinet is inside either, the honest answer is that this work is the manufacturer's rather than ours — and that sentence is worth considerably more to you than our invoice.

Why "it needs a recharge" is not a diagnosis

A sealed system does not consume refrigerant. It is a closed circuit, and the quantity in it when it left the factory is the quantity that should be in it in year twelve. So a system that is low is a system that has leaked, and putting more gas into it without finding the leak means the same appliance, the same call and the same money again in a few months.

That is the single most useful thing to know when comparing quotes on this equipment. A quote to find the leak, repair it, evacuate the system and recharge it to the maker's stated weight is a sealed-system repair. A quote to "top it up" is not; it is a delay with an invoice attached.

The second thing worth knowing is that the diagnosis has physical signs rather than opinions attached to it: where frost forms and where it does not, what the compartment does over a full cycle, what the compressor is doing while all of that happens. Ask which of those was observed. An answer that names them is a diagnosis, and an answer that does not is a guess.

If it turns out to be a repair

Every job on this site is priced the same way: an on-site diagnostic first, the figure agreed in writing before anybody starts.

    Compressor replacement

Sealed-system work plus the compressor itself. It is the largest single job on a cold appliance, and it is worth being certain about before it is quoted — a compressor that is running but not achieving pressure and a compressor that has failed are different diagnoses with different answers.

    • Confirmed by measurement before it is quoted
    • Warranty position checked first
    • Recovery, replacement and recharge as one job

Questions people ask about this

How do I know it is really the sealed system?

Ask what was measured and what the numbers were. A sealed-system diagnosis rests on pressures and temperatures at known points in the circuit. If nobody can tell you those, nobody has diagnosed it — they have eliminated everything else, which is not the same thing.

Why is it so much more expensive?

Refrigerant work is licensed and equipment-bound, the operation is continuous rather than staged, and on a built-in column the appliance has to come out of the joinery before anything technical starts. The compressor is the expensive part; the process and the access are most of the rest.

Is it worth repairing?

Often, on built-in refrigeration, because the alternative is not a delivery — it is an appliance plus a panel plus fitting plus a lead time. And Liebherr covering sealed-system parts into the twelfth year is the manufacturer telling you what it expects the cabinet to do.

My appliance is four years old.

Then check the warranty before anything else. Liebherr publishes five years parts and labor on exactly these five components, and a visit that ends with us pointing you at that is the right outcome rather than a wasted one.
