Read what the appliance is showing, before clearing it
A number between F1 and F5, a flashing display, a lit alarm LED, a power-failure indicator. Each of these is evidence and each of them disappears when somebody presses the wrong thing first.

Door open longer than 180 seconds. Temperature not low enough after warm food or a long door-open. Below-freezing-only display showing dashes. A power failure that pushed the compartment warm. All published, all normal.
