Two dashes mean it is not below freezing yet — three to five hours from a cold start, and after a power failure. A power-failure light means it got warm while the power was off. Neither is a repair.

It is working and it is not there yet. That display only shows temperatures below freezing, so dashes mean above. Give it three to five hours from cold — longer in a warm room — and it will show a number. If it is still dashes the next morning, then something is wrong.
